Google Video on Philly WiFi

Check out the new Google video search engine. Here are the results about Philly wireless and the press conference with Mayor Street.

Philly's CIO Interviewed About WiFi

The CIO for the city is interviewed here at MobilePipeline.com.

Important or notable tidbits:

* The network will use 802.11b. Why not 802.11g?? I guess they want to build an outdated network from the get go.

* "WiMax" (notstandardized) used for approx. 60% of network backhaul.

* 1Mbps symmetrical service will be offered.

* Tropos Networks appears to be a leading equipment vendor. Tropos has supplied the trial gear thus far I think.

Of note, however, is that the CIO talks about this like a new, government-run business that is an alternative to Cable and DSL. I think that this should be viewed more as a public service that is a supplement to those services for most and the only access for a few. I have a feeling that this government-run business may not make the best choices; as evidenced by at least the choice to use 802.11b out of the gate. Will they mesh the network? Will the APs be secured? How secure will traffic on the network be? Will the city respond to technical trouble calls (they barely respond to calls about the trash)? These and many other questions will need to be answered.

What This Blog is About

So this is our first post. This is a blog that is all about the Philadelphia municipal wi-fi project. Think of it as a coming together place for developments about the project, and a place where you can comment about news and experiences with the system as it is rolled out.
